NY1's latest Queens People of the Week are doing all they can to inspire, mentor, and guide young Rockaway residents into bright futures.

Lisa Johnson-Cooper is a true believer in the saying "children are our future."

"Giving back to children, this is my life calling," said Lisa Johnson-Cooper, NY1's Queens Person of the Week and leader of P.S./M.S. 183 Q Cub Scouts.

When Cooper and her husband Charles moved to Rockaway Park, they were disappointed in the lack of resources for young people.

So they decided to change that.

Seven years ago, they started a Boy Scout troop.

"Kids need something to do, outside of just hanging in the parks, street corners, places like that," said Charles Cooper, NY1's Queens Person of the Week and Cub Master. "And if they're part of something, they feel wanted and needed. And they're doing something."

Over the years, the Coopers have mentored dozens of young boys.

They do arts and crafts, go on camping trips, and to the movies.

"I've been learning new things, doing arts and crafts. I learned how to use a bow and arrow," said 9-year-old Boy Scout Christopher Ramnarine.

But it's so much more than just camping and crafts -- the boys are also learning respect and responsibility.

"You see them grow up and change. They're able to work out some problems, instead of acting out. So growth. Definitely growth and maturity," added Johnson-Cooper.

And not only are the Coopers running the weekly meetings and taking the kids on trips, they're making sure families can afford it.

It costs $36 to join the Scouts -- and for some, paying that fee is difficult.

The Coopers started a Go Fund Me campaign to raise money to help families in need.

"A lot of the people in the community, a lot of the families are just getting back from Hurricane Sandy and everything that happened," said Johnson-Cooper. "And they lost a lot, so if we can do this to help them, it would be great."

And so for giving young boys opportunities they may not otherwise get to experience, Lisa Johnson-Cooper and Charles Cooper are our Queens People of the Week.
