Hair salons turn pink as part of a new breast cancer awareness initiative in Brooklyn.

The NYU Langone Cancer Center has launched a new grassroots program to help educate women about breast cancer and the importance of early detection.

Teams are hitting the streets and going to salons, churches and block parties in underserved communities to help women get access to regular screenings.

"A lot of times women because of work, childcare issues, they’re not going out and getting that done," said Shelia Willis, patient navigator at NYU Langone. "So we want to equip women with the tools. And we’ll meet them where they are. So if we have to come to the beauty salon to get you signed up to get the mammogram, then that’s where we’re coming."

NYU says it plans to expand the program to other boroughs.

The initiative is being spearheaded by breast cancer survivor Beatrice Welters.
