The city is reminding people that it's illegal for your building owner to not provide heat and hot water for your apartment on cold days and nights.

"Heat season" officially began across the five boroughs on October 1.

If the outside temperature falls below 55 degrees between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., the city says owners must heat apartments to at least 68 degrees.

If it's below 40 degrees outside between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., it must be at least 55 degrees inside.

Tenants should notify their building owner, managing agent or super if the heat goes out.

For all heat related complaints, call 311.
