An 8-month-old child was fatally struck by a vehicle late Friday morning in Queens, and police have charged the driver of the car that hit him. NY1's Ruschell Boone filed the following report.

Relatives of 8-month-old Navraj Raju could not contain their grief as they told spoke about the toddler's death with family members in New York and India.

The toddler was killed when a white van backed out of a driveway on Astoria Boulevard near 93rd Street and hit his stroller.

The infant's great-aunt says it was another blow to Navraj's mother, who was already dealing with the loss of her brother.

Great-aunt: The baby's mom, her brother last year this month died also.
Q: This is just extremely hard?
Great-aunt: Very hard.

Investigators watched surveillance video of the incident from inside a deli. The recording shows a 35-year-old woman pushing the 8-month-old in a stroller after leaving the store.

Two witnesses told NY1 the woman stopped at the driveway and was bent over when 44-year-old Armando Rodriguez slowly backed out and struck the carriage. The child was pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital.

Rodriguez remained at the scene, but he was arrested for driving without a license.

His friends were also stunned by the news, calling it a freakish accident. One man said the driver could not see the woman or her child because of where they were positioned behind the vehicle.

"He's a good guy. The driver is a very good guy," the man said. "He's very careful all the time, you know."

The investigation into the crash is still ongoing.
