An airplane carrying Republican vice presidential candidate Mike Pence slid off the runway while landing at New York's LaGuardia Airport Thursday evening.

It happened just before 8 p.m. local time.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates LaGuardia Airport, says the plane ended up in the arrester bed at the end of the runway.

There were no injuries, according to the Port Authority, which says the 37 passengers and 11 crew members on board were removed safely from the back of the plane.

The FAA says a "crushable concrete runway safety technology called an Engineered Material Arresting System stopped the plane."

Pence took to Twitter just before 9 p.m. Thursday to thank first responders.

Donald Trump addressed his running mate's rough landing during a campaign rally in Geneva, Ohio, reassuring supporters.

"I just spoke to our future vice president, and he's OK," Trump said. "Do you know he was in a big accident with a plane? The plane skidded off the runway and was pretty close to grave, grave danger, but I just spoke to Mike Pence and he's fine. Got out, everybody's fine."

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton also sent well wishes to Pence and others on the plane on Twitter.

LaGuardia was closed in the immediate aftermath of the incident, but New York City's emergency notification system says the airport is open again with "limited air traffic."
