As daylight hours get shorter this season, the city is warning drivers and pedestrians to be extra careful.

Mayor de Blasio's signature Vision Zero program is rolling out a new public awareness campaign to keep New Yorkers safe in pre-dawn and after-dusk hours.

The city says this is the deadliest time of year for pedestrians, with serious crashes rising nearly 40 percent during the early evening hours, compared to other times of the year.

Crashes also double in the fall and winter months because of low visibility.

Starting Friday, the city will hand out  pamphlets to New Yorkers which explain how to travel safely.

The NYPD will also crack down on drivers who speed and fail to yield to pedestrians.

The DOT says it will put more officers on the streets if needed.
