A worker is dead after falling into a sewage treatment tank in Brooklyn.

It happened Wednesday afternoon at the Coney Island Wastewater Treatment Plant on Knapp Street in Sheepshead Bay.

Michael Buffamante, 31, a contractor for the city Department of Environmental Protection, was installing equipment when he fell into the tank.

"There was no sign of him on the surface of the water, so they went into the tank, which is 35 feet deep, and approximately eight minutes later, they pulled him out and got him on to land, and immediately, CPR was started on him to try to get a pulse," said Deputy Chief John Hodgens of the FDNY.

Buffamante was rushed to Coney Island Hospital but did not survive.

It is unclear what caused the accident.

A spokesperson for DEP says according to on-site staff, he was wearing protective gear while performing the installation.
