NEW YORK - Some shocking numbers from the state attorney general about guns.

A new report by Eric Schneiderman's office says 74 percent of firearms used in New York crimes were purchased out of state.

Schneiderman on Tuesday unveiled a web tool examining 53,000 guns recovered by law enforcement between 2010 and 2015.

He says newly-bought guns are being trafficked to New York through states with lax gun laws as part of the so-called "Iron Pipeline."

Schneiderman says the new online tool helps keep New Yorkers more informed.

"You can see if your community has a bigger problem with handguns or rifles. You can see how likely a gun recovered in your city or town was trafficked from out of state. You can also see which states are supplying crime guns to your cities, and there are substantial variations," Schneiderman said.

The report also found that handguns are a popular choice for criminals, accounting for 75 percent of the recovered firearms.

And nine out of ten times, those handguns came from another state.
