The Justice Department will reportedly charge an NYPD officer in the death of Eric Garner.

Sources tell the New York Post that it'll happen, quote "sooner than later."

That news comes a day after the New York Times reported that the federal government replaced the city-based prosecutors working the case with a team from Washington.

Garner died in 2014, after Officer Daniel Pantaleo put him in a chokehold during an arrest on Staten Island.

His lawyer says he hasn't heard anything about federal charges, and the government isn't confirming either report.

Garner's daughter Erica tweeted that the she hadn't heard anything beyond the report in the Times, but that the move to replace the prosecutors would be a step toward justice for her father.

The head of the city's top police union criticized the reported change.

Pat Lynch says the government is trying to reach a quote "predetermined outcome" against Pantaleo.

A grand jury on Staten Island declined to indict the officer in December of 2014.
