Students transferring from Queensborough Community College to Queens College will soon have an easier time moving forward in their science classes.

Both schools received a $5.6 million dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Education for students in STEM fields  or science, technology, engineering and math.

The money will help create a collaborative program for professors from both colleges to teach courses that transfer from one school to the next.

Staff say this will help students avoid spending money on repeat courses or falling behind because they missed an important class at their community college.

One of the main focuses of the program is to make the field more accessible to Latinos and women.

"We want to make sure that the country has the talent that we need. And that is talent that is diverse. Right. By race and by gender," said Queens College President, Felix Matos Rodriguez.

"We'll lose that innovation if we are systematically excluding certain groups," said Eva Fernandez, the assistant provost for Queens College.

The president of Queens College hopes this system will be incorporated at other community colleges to get more students to graduate in the STEM fields.
