The city Department of Education is expanding its diversity program.

Twelve middle schools and high schools in Manhattan and Brooklyn have joined the Diversity in Admissions Pilot program.

It makes it easier for low-income and at-risk children to be admitted into certain schools.

Schools set aside seats for students in the welfare system, learning the English language, or who meet other criteria like having an incarcerated parent.

The DOE began the initiative last year to help boost diversity at the city's elementary schools.

The city gave schools the opportunity to apply for the program this past spring.

Nineteen schools are now participating.
