New upgrades are coming to a Harlem park as part of the city's Community Parks Initiative.

Community leaders broke ground on renovations at Martin Luther King Jr. Park, located on Lenox Ave between West 113th and 114th Streets.

They say the complex will undergo a five million dollar make-over, its first overhaul in about two decades.

The upgrades include two full-sized basketball courts, an outdoor gym with adult fitness equipment, and a spray shower.

Officials say an investment in the park is an investment in the community.

"This is our way of letting all of the generations in this community enjoy this park, this is where friends are made, this is where people learn how to play sports," said Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver. "And you need open space in areas that are so dense. It's what makes our communities more livable.

"I used to play in this playground when I was a kid, but certainly, after at least 20 years it's time for a makeover," said Assemblyman Keith Wright.

Renovations are expected to be done by the end of next year.
