ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Some new cutbacks by Verizon could result in hundreds of job losses in New York State.

The phone and Internet giant has announced that it is closing call centers in five states, including New York.

The closures mean the state will lose around 850 jobs, most of them from just outside Rochester.

Verizon says all workers are being offered jobs at other sites.

A spokesman for Governor Andrew Cuomo's office says the job cuts are "an egregious example of corporate abuse."

Other states facing call center closures are Connecticut, Maine, Nebraska and California.
