An independent studio in the Bronx is etching its place in the entertainment industry. NY1's Erin Clarke filed the following report.

Every rapper, singer and radio host starts somewhere. For many from the Bronx, that place is Damatrix Studios.

"This just builds that platform. It gets you ready," said radio personality Mocha Marie.

Damatrix has been around for about 16 years, created by Bronx-born music producer Damien Williams, who grew up close to the industry.

"Mom worked for a talent agency, so growing up, I used to see her 8x10 pictures of her with Luther Vandross," Williams said.

As a young man, he realized that it was difficult for up-and-coming artists to break into the business.

"Everybody had the same feeling. They wanted to get on and get signed," he said.

So in 2001, he opened a small recording studio in his home.

A radio show followed. After a while, Williams realized people were actually listening.

"Jeff Klein, who's the senator now, he came into my studio," Williams said. "Suit and everything, and we did an interview with him."

More than a decade later, Williams operates a nearly block-long recording studio on Adee Avenue in the NorthEast Bronx. There are also facilities to produce internet shows, giving independent broadcasters, artists and DJs an outlet to expose a wider audience to their talents. Forty internet radio programs are now based there.

"You could find anybody from a politician to an adult actress, so we cross the gamut," said Kevin Pryor, host of The 950 Lounge.

And as Damatrix Studios has grown, so have the careers of people who've worked with Williams.

The DJ of rapper Remy Ma, DJ Bedtyme, started out with him 10 years ago.

"I was able to engineer my own radio show. I was able to produce different sessions where I did mixtapes and recorded artists music. So I became that engineer, I became that producer because of things I learned watching him," DJ Bedtyme said.

Despite mainstream success, Williams says it is important his studio remains true to its origin...

"The engineers here are all young people. They're all interns," he said.

"I didn't go out and try to get on a better network just to get a job. I decided to be an entrepreneur and create something stable so that it could help the community."

Helping the commuity, and young artists.
