The convicted arsonist behind the infamous Happy Land Social Club fire has died in prison.

Officials say Julio Gonzalez suffered an apparent heart attack while serving a life sentence at an upstate correctional facility.

He was 61 years old, and would have been eligible for parole two months from now.

Gonzalez was thrown out of Happy Land Social Club one night in 1990 following an argument with an ex-girlfriend who worked there.

He later came back and lit the club on fire- killing 87 people.

The club had no fire exits or sprinklers.

At the time, the arson was considered the largest mass murder in American history.
