Real Estate developers take another step in the makeover of a South Bronx neighborhood. As borough reporter Erin Clarke tells, a developer who is making his mark in the area plans to open a food hall with trendy dining options.

It's been touted as the next Williamsburg.

Over the last few months a coffee shop, boutique, an "arts space" and several other businesses have opened in Port Morris.

But what the neighborhood still lacks is a large a variety of places where people can eat.

"Not everybody wants to eat at Mott Haven Bar and Grill all the time, not everybody wants to eat at Charlie's or Cetae every day," said General Manager of the Mott Haven Bar and Grill, Joseph Diaz.

Now there's a plan to transform this industrial building into a food hall called Bruckner Market.

The man behind the project is developer Keith Rubenstein, who is building luxury housing along the waterfront here.

He rubbed some people the wrong way when he threw a party last year to generate buzz about the area.

But he says he trying to demonstrate his plans do have the community in mind.

"When you look at dollars and cents what would be more economically viable?" asked Keith Rubenstein, President of Somerset Partners. "Building an apartment building or an office building? Populating with great food uses, I think that's more important to me than building a regular apartment building or an office building."

The Bruckner Market will have a brewery, about 20 sit down and takeout restaurants on the ground floor, two to three full-service restaurants on second floor, and a beer garden on the roof.

Rubenstein says the market will include affordable, as well as trendy, food options.

Celebrity chef Douglas Rodriguez already has signed on.

"He a James Beard award winning chef," Rubenstein said. "He's Cuban and he's known as the Godfather of Latin cuisine."

Rubenstein expects the food hall to open up here within the next 12 to 18 months

Vowing to employ Bronx residents, the developer says he's teaming up with career placement officials at Monroe College to hire students and graduates.

"Local jobs is really one of the most important things," Rubenstein.

Rubenstein adds that the goal is to provide more opportunities for Bronx residents, and to make the borough a destination for people living elsewhere.

"It could draw a whole lot of, a new audience to the neighborhood," said Charlie Said, owner of Charlie's Bar & Kitchen.
