The NYPD is investigating a police involved shooting early Tuesday morning where investigators say the suspect got a hold of an officer's gun and killed someone before another cop shot the suspect. Michael Herzenberg has the story.

Residents off the Grand Concourse say they heard gunfire and knew it wasn't July 4th fireworks so it had to be bad.

"I just took cover in my apartment," said one neighbor.

Many didn't realize what exactly happened until morning.

"Oh my god that's very sad," said another.

Police say it started in this bodega at East 198th Street after 1 a.m. Tuesday.

That 30-year-old Efraim Guzman argued with employees and he stormed out to go to the bodega across Valentine Avenue.

Sources tell NY1 that 49-year-old Wali Camara, a clerk from the first shop then went to warn those in the other store that Guzman was trouble, but workers there got into a brawl with Guzman and someone waved down this patrol vehicle.

"As the officers were escorting Mr. Guzman out of the store, Mr. Guzman was able to grab a gun from out of one of the officers' holsters," said Assistant Chief Larry Nikunen. "The officers struggled with Mr. Guzman to regain control of his gun when the second officer fired three shots at Mr. Guzman striking him twice"

But police say Guzman was able to almost empty the officer's service weapon, firing 15 rounds. And the cop who returned fire tried to shield employees, but one bullet struck and killed Camara — someone customers knew well.

"He was a hell of a nice guy," said one. "He didn't bother nobody. He just come home from work went to work minded his own business."

Neighbors say the victim worked at the bodega and lived around the corner.

"He was just trying to look out," said another. "I don't think he meant any harm or nothing."

This woman says he was the father of two adult children and rented a room from her for more than a decade while working at the bodega. He's someone those on the block will miss.

"He'll help anybody that's the kind of a guy he is."

Guzman is hospitalized and said to be stable. He has a criminal record that includes robbery and assault. In one instance, he allegedly seriously injured someone with a bat.
