Crews remained at the scene of a fire Thursday morning that tore through a decades-old woodworking shop in Queens.

City fire officials say it began around 7 p.m. Wednesday on the first floor of a factory located at 43-24 37th Street in Long Island City.

It was brought under control about four hours later.

Fire officials say materials inside the factory made it difficult to fight the flames.

"It's a mill workshop, so it had a lot of wood, had a lot of lacquers, thinners, paint in the shop, which led to a quick fire spread," said FDNY Chief of Department James Leonard. "The shop was closed at the time, so we don't anticipate anybody being in there."

No word yet on what caused the fire.

Officials say more than 250 firefighters were called to the scene.
