After nearly 100 years in business, Elmhurst Dairy is closing its doors.

The dairy first opened in Elmhurst, Queens in 1919 and moved to its current site in Jamaica in 1940.

It supplies much of the milk for the city's public schools, but its owners say a difficult business environment is forcing them to close.

The company's CEO issued a statement saying in part, "My family was dedicated to trying to keep the plant open long past the years that it was economically viable. The family did so at a very high cost but is unable to continue to do so without ongoing losses."

Elmhurst Dairy is the last milk processing plant operating in the city.

Nearly 300 people will lose their jobs when the plant closes this fall.
