An elderly man died after being hit by a Fire Department ambulance in the East Village.

It happened around 2:20 p.m. Monday at the corner of 14th Street and 2nd Avenue.

Police say the victim was 81 years old and people we spoke with say it's not a safe intersection.

"It's the street, it's very dangerous," said one bystander. "It's too much, too many cars going by fast. You have to wait for the light. If you don't wait for the light, there's a problem."

"I feel that the ambulance should be a little more careful because I know when they're coming, they're rushing to get someone to the hospital," said another. "But there are seniors crossing and it takes them so long to get the light."

The man was rushed to Bellevue Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

An investigation into the crash continues.
