A tree in Brooklyn was dedicated to a beloved resident who died earlier this year at the age of 116.

Susannah Mushatt Jones, known affectionately as Miss Susie, was the world's oldest living person when she died in May.

Wednesday would have been her 117th birthday.

The tree will be located on the grounds of the Vandalia Senior Center in East New York, where she spent her last 30 years.

"This is a wonderful celebration of a life well-lived," said Shola Olatoye, CEO of the New York City Housing Authority. "I think Miss Susie represents the values that we all should aspire to, one of dedicating your life to in service of others."

"Trees are the ultimate symbol of resiliency, so I think it's a perfect fit to honor Miss Susie that way," said Nelson Villarrubia, executive director of Trees New York.

"I'm very happy about this day. And you know something? Seeing that tree over there, I will always think about her," said Seobra Mushatt, Miss Susie's niece.

Miss Susie was born in 1899 in Alabama, the last-known living American to be born in the 1800s.

The world's oldest person is now a 116-year-old woman living in Italy.
