A student veterans center at a local college is about to get a big makeover.

The Student Veterans of America gave their Queens College chapter an $8,000 grant to renovate their student space. The Home Depot Foundation also contributed.

Money will pay for new computers, chairs, a new fridge, and a shelf for a textbook exchange.

To apply, the club submitted a budget for the project along with a business plan.

According to Queens College, the school is home to more than 200 student veterans.

“The biggest thing they miss from the military is having a sense of camaraderie with their brothers and sisters,” said Dennis Torres, a Veterans Outreach Specialist with Queens College. “Knowing that we're going to spruce things up here and make it look a lot better, it's going to make it easier for them to come together and pretty much thrive here on campus.”

“It's a great feeling, being able to give back to the veteran community and doing something that benefits everyone here,” added student Corp. James Marone.

A Home Depot team will start renovations in the lounge later this summer.
