With temperatures soaring and the city under a heat advisory today, New Yorkers are being urged to do whatever they can to stay cool.

Temperatures will be in the 90s with high humidity which will make it feel like it’s about 100 to 104 degrees this afternoon.

The heat advisory will be in effect until 8 p.m.

An air quality alert has also been issued for the five boroughs until 11 p.m.

Cooling centers will be open all over the five boroughs.

They include libraries, senior centers, and Housing Authority facilities.

The city's beaches and outdoors pools are also open.

Beaches are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Pools are open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Remember to only swim when lifeguards are present.

Sprinkler caps for fire hydrants are also available.

You can get one at your local firehouse as long as you are at least 18 years old and show ID.

Mayor Bill de Blasio is also asking New Yorkers to be mindful of their energy usage. This, after more than a thousand Con Ed customers lost power Sunday in East Harlem.

"We really want people to take heed of the instruction to set thermostats to 78 degrees, 78 degrees will keep you cool enough, it will keep you safe, but it will allow for us to protect against blackouts and power outages and no one wants to go through that," De Blasio said.

Governor Andrew Cuomo is also issuing statewide measures to ease the demand on powergrids.

He is urging New Yorkers to keep shades closed and turn off lights and unnecessary electronics.

The governor also says that Con Ed and the MTA have activated programs to ease energy use.

The city has set up a special website with information about dealing with the hot weather.

You can find it at nyc.gov/beattheheat.
