Former Governor George Pataki is being seriously considered as a member of the newly-created Puerto Rico fiscal control board.

A Pataki spokesman said the former governor has been approached about being part of the seven-member board that was created by Congress this week to help Puerto Rico restructure its massive $72 billion debt.

Pataki’s possible membership on the board was first reported Friday by the Daily News, which said that former Lieutenant Governor Richard Ravitch and Harry Wilson, a former candidate for State Comptroller, are also under consideration.

Members of the board will be picked by President Barack Obama, who will choose some names from lists provided by Congressional leaders.

As governor, Pataki opposed the U.S. Naval bombing of the Puerto Rican island of Vieques and made an effort to build bridges with the state’s Puerto Rican population.
