A community came together at the Apollo Theater on Saturday to raise awareness and create positive change around issues impacting young people.

Teams of dancers selected a social campaign they were passionate about, ranging from domestic violence to racial equality to gun violence.

They were judged on their dance moves as well as how well they got their message across.

"A lot of our community was getting affected by gun violence and a lot of people we're getting killed, so we thought it was time for us to send a message," said Nadia Jones, a member of the dance team SEBNC Clovers. "I was actually walking home and one of my friends was shot.

"Someone in our community was getting shot every day and we wanted to put an end to it because it could have been us walking from school and got shot," explained Madysen Daley, another member of the SEBNC Clovers.

"To know that our young people are taking leadership roles in the community, becoming peer mentors will actually stay with them for the rest of their lives," said Darryl Rattray, the Department of Youth and Community Development's associate commissioner.

The department sponsored the event.
