A former White House official is dead after he was struck by a car in Manhattan.

It happened at 11 a.m. Friday at the corner of Lexington Avenue and 79th Street on the Upper East Side.

Investigators say 84-year old Gerald Walpin was crossing 79th Street when a 52-year old man driving an SUV hit him.

Walpin was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.

Police say the driver stayed at the scene and the investigation is ongoing.

Walpin served as an inspector general under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

He was fired by Obama in 2009 over his handling of an investigation into former NBA star and Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson.
