A memorial was held in Brooklyn to honor of the mother of Tupac Shakur.

Community activists gathered at the House of the Lord Church in Boerum Hill to celebrate the life of Afeni Shakur, who died of a suspected heart attack last month.

Shakur was a political activist and leading member of the Black Panther Party chapter in New York.

Those who knew her say she was an inspirational figure.

"She was brilliant, she was erratic, she was gorgeous, she had lots of energy," said Kathleen Cleaver, former communications secretary for the Black Panther Party. "This is someone who graduated from performing arts so essentially she was a very gifted teenager who wanted to be an actress but she ended up a revolutionary."

"She was a super person, a member of this church with two parts that and that was the love that she had," said Herbert Daughtry, national minister at The House of the Lord Church.

Afeni Shakur was 69 years old.
