The hit musical "Hamilton" took home top honors at the 70th annual Tony Awards Sunday night, as members of the theater community responded throughout the evening to the horror of the morning's terror attack in Orlando, Florida.

The awards show, at Manhattan's Beacon Theater, took place 21 hours after a gunman claiming allegiance to ISIS shot and killed at least 50 people at a gay nightclub in the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.

After winning the Tony for Best Original Score, "Hamilton" creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda paid tribute to the victims of the massacre with a tear-filled sonnet.

"This show is proof that history remembers. We live through times when hate and fear seem stronger. We rise and fall, and light from dying embers, remembrances that hope and love last longer," Miranda said.

"And love is love, is love, is love, is love, is love, is love, is love cannot be killed or swept aside," Miranda continued, in tears as the crowd cheered.

Earlier in the show, host James Corden dedicated the show to the victims of the shooting.

"On behalf of the theater community and everyone in this room, our hearts go out to all of those affected by this atrocity. All we can say is, You are not on your own right now," Corden said. "Your tragedy is our tragedy. Theater is a place where every race, creed, sexuality, and gender is equal, is embraced, and is loved. Hate will never win."

In all, "Hamilton" took home 11 Tonys, including Best Musical, Best Leading Actor for Leslie Odom Jr., Best Featured Actress for Renée Elise Goldsberry and Best Featured Actor for Daveed Diggs. The musical fell one short of "The Producers'" record 12 wins in 2001.

"The Color Purple" won Best Revival of a Musical and Best Leading Actress for star Cynthia Erivo, and "The Humans" won for Best Play and Best Scenic Design, with Reed Birney winning for Best Featured Actor in a Play and Jayne Houdyshell winning for Beatured Actress.
