NEW YORK -- President Barack Obama is looking to turn the famed Stonewall Inn into the first national monument dedicated to gay rights.

The Greenwich Village bar has been considered the birthplace of the modern gay rights movement ever since customers fought back against a police raid in 1969.

It was officially designated a city landmark last year.

The proposals being considered by the Obama administration would also cover Christopher Park, which sits across the street from the Stonewall.

A public meeting about the plan is set for next Monday in Manhattan.
