As citywide construction booms, worker safety is now the focus as the Buildings Department's Construction Safety week kicks off Monday.

Officials say they're sweeping nearly 1,500 city sites to get out the message to workers that safety comes first.

The department is also enforcing tightened regulations and penalties following February's deadly crane collapse in lower Manhattan.

"Cutting corners is just not an acceptable way of doing business. Getting violations is not an acceptable way of doing business. We've isolated that most types of accidents are occurring in a certain type of building," said DOB Commissioner Rick Chandler.

"We take a lot of measures to protect workers from falling and debris from falling," added Related Companies Vice President Michael Alacha.

The Buildings Department says there are about 40,000 active construction sites across the city.

Twelve deaths and over 400 accidents were reported at work sites last year.
