The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has given the green light to a study that could possibly reopen the Rockaway Beach rail line in Queens.

The line, which ran from Rego Park to Rockaway Park, was taken out of commission more than 50 years ago.

Advocates say the area has few transportation options and that they have been fighting to get the rail line reactivated.

The study is expected to explore how residents get around, the need for the railroad and the issues associated with bringing it back to life.

It is expected to be submitted to Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie for review by next June.
