The number of families living in city homeless shelters has reached an alarming number — even as the city says the number of New Yorkers on the street has dropped.

The Department of Homeless Services says 12,334 parents and children called the city's shelters home during the month of April.

The previous record was set back in December 2014, with an average of 12,281 families sleeping in shelters.

This comes just one day after the city's HOPE Count announced that the number of New Yorkers living on the streets had dropped by 12% in February.
