Authorities say two people are dead and around 30 people are being treated for injuries after an Amtrak train from New York City crashed in Pennsylvania Sunday.

Amtrak officials say just after 8 this morning, train 89 was on its way to Savannah, Georgia, when the lead engine struck a backhoe on the tracks in Chester, around 15 miles south of Philadelphia, causing it to derail.

Two people near the backhoe were killed.

There were nearly 350 passengers and seven crew members on board.

One passenger described a harrowing experience.

"It felt like the train really hit something and there were three or four really big bangs and it threw us off the chairs, the seats that we were sitting in," one passenger said. "There was a lot of smoke, everybody was like yelling, and then the train kinda stopped."

All Amtrak service between New York and Philadelphia has been suspended.

Officials from the Federal Railroad Administration are at the scene and investigating.

Anybody with questions about family or friends on train 89 should call Amtrak's emergency hotline at 1-800-532-9101.
