With summer right around the corner, the YMCA is making sure kids have the tools necessary to stay safe in the water.

The Y is offering free lessons for children of all ages so they can learn basic swimming and water safety skills.

It's all part of "Safety Around Water" week.

"We're the place to go so you can be safe in and around water, not just in pools but around the beach, boating safety, home pools, all of that," said YMCA Vice President of Healthy Lifestyles Lori Rose Benson.

"This week is a great opportunity for you to introduce your kids to a free program, come in and try out your local YMCA, and then maybe enroll them in swimming lessons for the month of May and June to really prep them to be safe in and around the water for the summer," said Prospect Park YMCA Membership, Sales and Engagement Director Meghan Gough.

There are 19 YMCA locations around the city equipped with swimming pools.
