The man who pleaded guilty to beating a transgender woman to death in Manhattan has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.
James Dixon, 25, was convicted of first-degree manslaughter in the death of 21-year-old Islan Nettles after entering a guilty plea earlier this month.
Prosecutors were recommending a 17-year sentence.
Investigators say Nettles was walking with three friends in Harlem in August 2013 when they encountered Dixon and a group of young men.
Police say Dixon punched Nettles in the head when he found out she was transgender.
Nettles was declared brain-dead days later and eventually taken off life support.
