Students from across the city put their skills to the test in a battle to represent their school at a state level.

Thomas Edison CTE high school held its fifth annual Skills USA conference Saturday.

The competition gives students who study a vocation or technology the chance to showcase their skills. More than 15 high schools participated in challenges that ranged from cosmetology to aviation.

Organizers say the citywide competition will help students get used to competing at a higher level.

"For AV it tests the skills I should already have and it's kind of nervous because you have to pull knowledge from 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade," said Aviation High School Student, Marilyn Guaman.

"To win this competition will bring not only pride to myself, but also my schools and I just think it will show that all my hard work and dedication will pay off," said Thomas Edison CTE High School Student, Abidah Hansraj.

Winners go on to represent their schools at state competitions.
