City Working to Renew Horse Carriage Licenses

City Hall is renewing the licenses of horse carriage operators, despite vowing to rein in the industry.

The license renewal deadline is just a few days away, and some operators had feared the worst.

But the city says it has processed 56 of the 68 available licenses.

Mayor Bill de Blasio had originally promised to ban the carriages citywide.

An eventual compromise fell apart.

In a statement, the mayor's office said, "The city has a legal obligation to renew the licenses of compliant carriages. These renewals have no bearing on our continued commitment to removing horse carriages from city streets."

The renewal allows carriage drivers to legally operate for another two years.
