Hip hop fans have started a petition to rename part of one Queens street after A Tribe Called Quest.

This comes days after the death of member Malik Taylor, better known to fans as Phife Dawg.

The street would be the stretch of Linden Boulevard between 192nd and 193rd Streets in the group's hometown of Saint Albans.

The petition's author says it's part of a larger effort to recognize the city's most iconic hip hop artists.

"They're like hip hop royalty," said LeRoy McCarthy. "They've been around since the late eighties and we want to honor them with a street name.

"And this is in conjunction with other street names which I've been trying to have named, Christopher Wallace Way for Biggie Smalls, right at this corner here at St. James and Fulton Street.

"Big Pun Place, I work with the family to have a street named for him in the Bronx. Wu Tang Clan, trying to have a street named Wu Tang Clan District in Staten Island and Beastie Boys in the Lower East Side."

Phife Dawg died from complications related to diabetes on Tuesday at the age of 45.

So far the proposal already has more than 2,300 signatures.

A spokesperson for City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito says she'd be happy to review the petition.
