A historic ocean liner that has fallen into disrepair may soon get a much-needed facelift.

Luxury travel company Crystal Cruises announced plans to refurbish the SS United States to the tune of $700 million.

Before her retirement in 1969, the SS US — often called "America's Flagship" — was one of the largest and fastest ships in the world.

Crystal Cruises will conduct a nine-month feasibility study of overhauling the ship.

If it passes the test, it will be turned into an 800-guest vessel, possibly based here in the city.

"Ideally, it would be great if she could be based out of New York, and we'd like to really take her around the world to some fabulous ports around the world," said Edie Rodriguez, the president and CEO of Crystal Cruises.

The rusted and run down SS US is owned by a conservation group and is currently stationed at a port in Philadelphia.
