Calling out Governor Andrew Cuomo and his administration for failing to maintain upkeep at homeless shelters, an audit by the State Controller Thomas DiNapoli found the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance's failed to monitor shelters which resulted in dangerous living conditions for homeless families and adults.

According to the report, auditors inspected 39 shelters in the state between April 2013 to August of 2015, and found "squalid" conditions ranging from rodent and vermin infestation, mold and fire safety issues.

More than half of the shelters are in the city.

Speaking with NY1 Tuesday morning, the governor said the state could have done more.

"I agree that the state was not aggressive for, not aggressive enough for a period of time and that's now changed and we have to do a better job and the city has manage the shelter system in accordance with the rules and regulations and we're gonna make sure that that happens," Cuomo said.

Governor Cuomo says his adminstration has made changes, including a state wide inspection system and better policing of shelter operators.
