The city announced Friday that it plans to shut down three charter schools at the end of the school year because of their continued low performances.

The Education Department said it will close Lefferts Garden Charter School and Beginning with Children, also in Brooklyn, along with Staten Island Community Charter School.

The department said they failed to meet benchmarks for improvement and struggled with low scores on state tests.

NY1 spoke with people at the Staten Island school who said they are sad to see it close.

"I think it's a shame that it's closing," said Tanisha Hereast, a parent. "It's a really good community, it's very family oriented."

The Education Department says it intends to work with families to make sure all students are relocated for the following school year.
