Mayor de Blasio is issuing a new slate of citywide construction safety provisions.

The mayor says the city is quadrupling penalties for builders who break serious safety rules from $2,400 to $10,000.

A superintendent will also be required at any construction site under ten stories.

Last year, 70 percent of construction-related accidents happened at sites smaller than 10 stories.

Contractors who fail to hire a construction superintendent will be fined $25,000.

De Blasio says the new measures will go a long way towards saving lives in the future.

"We're focusing on the lack of supervision, which we think has been one of the biggest problems,” the mayor said. “And again, I thank councilman Williams because he pointed out a way we can get at that. And we're also trying to show there's going to be much more teeth in the enforcement in terms of really harsh penalties and penalties that will grow. And I think that's going to make a big impact."

The city says it is also committed to conducting more than 1,500 enforcement sweeps at construction sites over the next 90 days, targeting contractors with poor safety records.
