A federal grand jury is looking at evidence in the police chokehold death of Eric Garner, sources tell NY1.

Federal prosecutors are trying to determine whether Garner's civil rights were violated by Officer Daniel Pantaleo.

Garner died after Pantaleo put him in a chokehold on Staten Island in July 2014.

The officer was trying to arrest Garner on suspicion of selling loose cigarettes.

Sources tell NY1 that two officers who were at the scene were called before the grand jury Wednesday..

A state grand jury decided not to bring criminal charges against Pantaleo, who is on modified duty.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton says an internal affairs investigation is complete.

But the NYPD is waiting to move forward until the federal government finishes its probe.
