It's going to be a bitter Valentine's weekend.

The coldest air of the season is slated to hit the city this weekend, with wind chills as low as -20 expected at one point.

With a polar vortex visiting the city, the wind chill is expected to be below zero most of Saturday and Sunday, with a low near 4 degrees Saturday morning, and temperatures in the teens most of the time during the day Saturday and Sunday.

Wind chills of -15 to -20 degrees are expected Saturday night through noon Sunday.

The Department of Emergency Management said Thursday that the frigid temperatures can be life-threatening for seniors, infants, and people with chronic medical conditions.

The city activated its Cold Blue status through Sunday night, according to officials, to make sure the homeless are off the streets and indoors.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said people should not take chances in the extreme cold.

"People have to take this very, very seriously," he said. "This is really abnormal and these are dangerous conditions."

"So we're asking everyone to change their habits, really think carefully about what they're doing in these circumstances."

Officials are also encourage you to wear multiple layers of clothing, keep clothing dry, and keep fingertips, ears, and noses covered while outside.

A low of 15 degrees, with a wind chill of 5 degrees, is expected for a windy Thursday night.

Friday is projected to start out sunny with a high of 20. There is a chance of snow showers Saturday morning.

Weather models show the potential for a storm system Tuesday. Based on current projections, it looks like it will be a mix of rain and snow for the morning rush before heavy rain hits.

Some icing issues/freezing rain threats are possible at the start of the storm during the Tuesday morning commute.
