We're getting our first look at the man killed in an elevator accident on the Lower East Side.

It happened late New Year's Eve in a Broome Street high rise.

Witnesses say three people — including 25-year-old Stephen Hewett-Brown — were stuck in the elevator and were attempting to climb out after prying open the door.

That's when they say the elevator began to move and crushed Hewett-Brown.

NY1 spoke to the woman who the victim helped to safety before he was killed.

"The elevator was going up when it came to a halt on the third floor," she said. "At that moment, the elevator started to move and the man held the door so I was able to go out from there."

"He asked a guy who was there for help and that guy tried to take him out."

Public records show that the building had seven complaints relating to malfunctioning elevators in 2015.

And in 2014 there were three active violations.

NY1 has reached out to the building's management for comment.
