A portion of what you pay for your Uber or Lyft ride could go to the MTA if some state lawmakers have their way.
State senators Martin Dilan and Brad Hoylman are introducing a bill that would give 25 percent of sales tax revenue from transportation network companies like Uber and Lyft to the MTA and other transit needs around the state.
According to officials, these ride services do not fall under the current tax law that would give a portion of the revenue to the MTA.
Dilan and Hoylman say there would be no increase in fees or charges for those riding Uber and Lyft. The MTA lost an estimated $10 million in revenue last year.
In response, Uber says their customers pay more in taxes than traditional taxis.
The MTA declined to comment on the proposal.
