NY1's Roma Torre was recognized Wednesday night for being a source of inspiration in the fight against colon cancer.

Roma received the Hope Award at the Michael's Mission's 7th annual benefit to raise awareness and support patients dealing with the disease.

She went public with her own battle with colon cancer last year and has encouraged others to educate themselves and get screened.

She also says she's thankful for much more than just the award.

"After my diagnosis I was embraced by these folks. They're so giving and so compassionate and I just don't have words to express my gratitude to all of these folks for what they did for me," Torre said.

Each year, Michael's Mission raises more than $500,000 from its benefits.
