A strike is looming for thousands of building cleaners across the city if they don't reach a new contract deal by New Year's Eve.

Members of Local 32BJ rallied in Midtown on Wednesday after voting to authorize a strike.

The union's current contract expires on December 31, and it is negotiating a new deal with the Retail Advisory Board.

Union members say the board has called for permanent cuts to new workers' benefits and salaries despite strong profits for commercial real estate.

"We believe that the economy is in great shape in New York City. The real estate industry is doing very well. It is our time for the workers to share in that wealth. We deserve a raise, we deserve to keep our benefits," said 32BJ President Hector Figeuroa.

"I believe that we deserve decent wages a decent contract," said Virginia Gomez, a 32BJ member.

"We shouldn't even have gotten to this point today. These workers deserve a good living wage, good health benefits and good pension benefits."

A walkout would affect more than a thousand buildings across the city, including the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center.
