A Brooklyn maker of frozen treats is dishing out two flavors inspired by the new Star Wars movie. NY1's Roger Clark filed the following report.

In the Star Wars saga, either you are on the Dark Side or the Light Side. And that's what the owners of Ample Hills Creamery call their Star Wars-themed frozen treats.

The treats coincide with the long-awaited release of the newest film in the series, "The Force Awakens."

"Very surreal," said Brian Smith, co-owner of Ample Hills Creamery.

"It's been wonderful. It's been challenging," said Jackie Cuscuna, co-owner of Ample Hills Creamery.

The force has been with Cuscuna and Smith, a former screenwriter of science fiction films. Their mom and pop ice creams shops in Brooklyn have gained national attention after the licensing deal with Disney.

The Light Side is a bright marshmallow ice cream with crispie clusters and cocoa crispies. The Dark Side is mega-chocolatey with espresso fudge brownies, cocoa crispies and white chocolate pearls.

The duo came up with the flavors without seeing any scenes from the film, but when it comes to Star Wars, they get it.

"We wanted to do something that really captured some of the essence, knowing not much about the film," Cuscuna said.

Cuscuna and Smith got some early help in this endeavor from an influential Ample Hills fan, Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger. The demand for the $36 packages of 4 pint containers, two of each flavor, has been out of this world...like in a galaxy far, far away.

"We're pinting 1,000 pints a day," Smith said.

Ample Hills has a limited three-month run on the flavors, 40,000 pints. It's already sold out until January 5. It's only available online for shipping, or you can pick it up at Ample Hills' Gowanus store.

The December release of "The Force Awakens" was helpful, since it's a typically less busy time for the ice cream biz.

"If Star Wars opened in May or June, we just couldn't have physically done this," Smith said.
