Chelsea has a new park, thanks to some activists.

Community organizers had been campaigning for a park for years, and now. city officials say they're getting one.

The new greenspace will sprout up on 20th Street between Sixth and Seventh avenues. The lot currently houses a vacant two-story Department of Sanitation building and a parking lot.

The group Friends of 20th Street Park say they can't wait to see the former trash site become a community treasure.

"This is the people's park," said one area resident.

"It's kind of unbelievable that after five years, this day is actually here," said another.

"It's amazing to think that this park could be here for hundreds of years and that people will come here and enjoy this park because of what everybody on this block and in this area came together to do," said a third.

The project is estimated to cost nearly $6 million, with the lion's share coming from City Hall.

The Parks Department will start hosting meetings in March about design ideas.
